Vernon J. Carriere Jr., MD

Dr. Carriere, Jr., was born in New Orleans. He graduated from Jesuit High school then attended Louisiana State University where he graduated summa cum laude. He has received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School of New Orleans. He went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Carriere is currently an active member in the American College of Gastroenterology, Jefferson Parish Medical Society, American Gastroenterology Association and American Society for Gastroenterology Endoscopy. He regularly attends national meetings and seminars on the latest advances in the field of gastroenterology.

Dr. Carriere is active staff at East Jefferson General Hospital and River Parishes Hospital.

He lives in Metairie, LA with his wife and three sons.


Nicholas J. Persich, MD

Dr. Persich was born in New Orleans, and received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School of New Orleans in 1987. He completed his internship, residency, fellowship and gastrointestinal endoscopy training at Louisiana State University Medical Center of New Orleans between 1987-1992. Having received his board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1990, Dr. Persich received his board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty of Gastroenterology in 1998 and obtained his recertification by the Board in 2008.

Dr. Persich is currently a member of the active staffs of East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie and River Parish Hospital in Laplace. Dr. Persich maintains active membership in numerous professional organizations including the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Physicians, Louisiana State Medical Society, and Jefferson Parish Medical Society. He is a Fellow of The American College of Physicians. Dr. Persich is also credentialed by the MD Anderson Physicians Network.

Dr. Persich entered the academic practice of medicine at the LSU Medical Center Department of Gastroenterology in New Orleans where he was Assistant Clinical Professor for six years teaching and instructing medical students, residents and fellows in the field of gastrointestinal medicine. In 1999, he entered private practice with IMG Healthcare, a multi-specialty group in New Orleans, until joining the practice of Dr. Silvers in December 2003. Dr. Persich has a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer and irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr. Persich lives in Metairie, Louisiana with his wife, Charlene, and his three children, Nicholas, Shane and Samantha.


Mark J. Wegmann, MD

Dr. Wegmann received his medical degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 2001. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship at LSU as well. He has been practicing in Metairie since 2007. He is a member of several GI societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American College of Gastroenterology and is Board Certified in Gastroenterology.

Dr. Wegmann practices at the Metairie office of Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates.


Julie C. Guider, MD

After finishing her advanced training, Dr. Guider joined Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates in 2018. She is continuing a legacy that her father, Dr. Ben Guider, started at MGA in 1989.

Dr. Guider views medicine as a partnership combining training and experience with the needs and goals of her patients to maximize their health and foster the overall well-being they deserve.

Dr. Guider treats all GI conditions and has a special interest in women’s health issues. She is one of the few gastroenterologists in the city specifically trained in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.

In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, going for walks, traveling, and chasing her two children around!

Rebekah (Becky) H.  Lemann, MD

Becky Lemann received her medical degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 2001. After completing her Internal Medicine Residency at LSU, she did a Gastroenterology Fellowship at the Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Lemann began practicing in Marrero in 2007. She is a member of several GI societies, including the American College of Gastroenterology, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and she is Board Certified in Gastroenterology.


Richard Awtrey, MD

Richard Awtrey was born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1973. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1996 and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 2001. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and his GI Fellowship at the LSU.
